Barbados General Election
Results - 13 December 1951 |
General elections were held in Barbados on 13 December 1951, the first held under universal suffrage. Elections were held to renew all 24 members of the House of Assembly on the normal expiration of their mandate, using a first-past-the-post system.
Electoral System
The 24 members of the House of Assembly were elected in 12 double-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting.
Background
There were 95,939 registered electors.
Political Parties & Candidates
Three parties contested the 1951 General Election. The Barbados Labour Party (BLP), led by Gantley Adams; the Barbados Electors' Association (BEA); and the West Indian National Congress Party (CP), led by Wynter Crawford.
There were 46 candidates contesting the election: BLP - 17, BEA - 18, CP - 2, and 9 independent candidates.
Results
The Barbados Labour Party was returned to office with 15 of the 24 seats. The Electors' Association won four seats, the Congress Party won two seats, and there were three Independent Members.
Edna Ermyntrude Bourne was the first woman to be elected as a member of the House of Assembly.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 64.65%.
Post-election
Ministerial government commenced on 1 February 1954. Sir Grantley Adams was the first Premier. Fred C. Goddard became the first Leader of the Opposition. |
