Barbados General Election
Results - 9 September 1971 |
General elections were held in Barbados on 9 September 1971. Elections were held to renew all the members of the House of Assembly on the normal expiration of their mandate, using a first-past-the-post system. These had been elected in 1966, prior to the country's gaining independence.
Electoral System
The 24 members of the House of Assembly were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting. There was no fixed election date in effect in Barbados at this time; hence, the choice of election date is the prerogative of the Prime Minister.
Background
In 1971, the system of double member constituencies based on the boundaries of the 11 parishes and of the City of Bridgetown was abolished. Twenty-four single member constituencies were established on the basis of an average electorate per constituency within a permitted percentage variation 90% - 110% by the Representation of the People Act, 1971.
On the 16 August 1971, the Governor-General issued a proclamation dissolving Parliament and issued Writs appointing Wednesday, 25 August 1971 as Nomination Day and Thursday, 9 September 1971 as Election Day.
There were 115,189 registered electors.
Political Parties & Candidates
Two parties contested the 1971 General Election: the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) , led by Prime Minister Errol Barrow; and the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP), led by Bernard St. John. There were 50 candidates with the BLP and DLP both presenting a full slate of 24 candiates. There were also 2 independent candidates.
Results
The result was a victory for the Democratic Labour Party, which won 18 of the 24 seats.
The Prime Minister Errol Barrow, leader of the victorious DLP , was re-elected for a third 5-year term and formed a new Cabinet.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 81.64%. |
