Congress Party (CP)

The Congress Party (CP), officially named the West Indian National Congress Party, was a minor political party in Barbados.

The Congress Party was founded and led by W.A. Crawford after his split from the Barbados Progressive League (BPL) largely over personal difference between leadership principles. In its first contested election in 1944, the Congress Party won eight seats, which permitted formation of a coalition government with Grantley Adams and the BPL, which also held eight seats. By the 1946 elections, the CP had dropped to third rank with seven seats to eight for the Electors Association, and nine for the Adams-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP). In the 1951 elections, the Congress Party received only 5.3% of the vote. It did not run in subsequent elections.
