National Democratic Party (NDP)

The National Democratic Party (NDP) was a centrist political party in Barbados. Formed primarily by defactors from the 1986 Democratic Labour Party (DLP) government, the NDP was led by former Finance Minister Dr. Richard Haynes. The NDP, with its four siting MPs, replaced the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), with its three MPs, as the official opposition party in the House of Assembly from 1989 to 1991.

The party first contested national elections in 1991, when it won 6.8% of the vote, but failed to win a seat - all four of its sitting MPs lost their seats. In the 1994 elections, the NDP increased its share of the vote to 12.8% and won a single seat, that of its political leader Richard Haynes. Tthe party did not contest any further elections.
