General Election Results - 4 February 1983

General elections were held in Bermuda on 4 February 1983 for all 40 seats in the House of Assembly using a first-past-the-post system. Each constituency returned two members to the House of Assembly.

Political Parties & Candidates

A total of 80 candidates from two parties contested the election, with both the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) each presenting a full slate of 40 candidates.

Results

The result was a victory for Premier John Sawn's United Bermuda Party (UBP), which won 26 of the 40 seats in  the House of Assembly. The Progressive Labour Party (PLP), led by Lois Browne-Evans won the 14 remaining seats.

In 18 constituencies both elected members were from the same party, whilst two constituencies elected one member of the United Bermuda Party and one from the Progressive Labour Party.

Voter Turnout

Voter turnout was 80.66%.
