General elections were held in Dominica on 15 August 1957 for the 8 elected seats in the Legislative Council using a first-past-the-post system.
Electoral System
The unicameral Parliament of Dominica, the Legislative Council, was composed of eight elected Representatives, in single-member constituencies through a first-past-the-post system.
Parties & Candidates
Two political parties – the Dominical Labour Party (DLP) and the People's National Movement (PNM) and nine independent candidates contested the election.
Results
The DLP won 3 seats, the PNM 2 seats, and 3 seats are won by independent candidates.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 75.6%.
Post-Election
On 1 January 1960, Britain grants Dominica self-government, with a Legislative Council and a Chief Minister. Frank Baron became Dominica’s first Chief Minister. |
