General elections were held in Dominica on 17 January 1961 for all 11 elected seats in the House of Assembly using a first-past-the-post system.
Electoral System
The unicameral Parliament of Dominica, the Legislative Council, was composed of 11 elected Representatives, in single-member constituencies through a first-past-the-post system.
Background
The number of elected seats was increased by 3 to 11 for the 1961 election.
Political Parties & Candidates
Thirty-eight candidates contested the 1961 general election. Five political parties presented candidates for the election. The Dominica Labour Party (DLP), led by Edward LeBlanc, presented a full slate of 11 candidates. The Dominica United People's Party (DUPP) presented 6 candidates, the Dominica Democratic Party (DPP) – 5, the Peasant and Workers Movement (PWM) – 4; and the All Island Industrial and Farmers Party (AIIFP) – 3. There were also nine independent candidates.
Election Campaign
It was a generally quiet election.
Results
The ruling Dominica United People’s Party (DUPP) was defeated by the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), which won seven of the 11 seats.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 76.9%.

The DLP’s leader, Edward LeBlanc became Chief Minister. |
