General elections were held in Dominica on 7 January 1966 for the 11 elected seats in the House of Assembly using a first-past-the-post system.
Electoral System
The unicameral Parliament of Dominica, the Legislative Council, was composed of 11 elected Representatives, in single-member constituencies through a first-past-the-post system.
Parties & Candidates
Twenty-nine candidates including 7 independents contested the election. Two political parties – the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the Dominica United People's Party (DUPP) – each presented full slates of 11 candidates for the election. Three women candidates contested the election.
Results
The result was a victory for the Dominica Labour Party, which won 10 of the 11 seats.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 80.3%.
Post-Election
Edward LeBlanc continued in his second term as Chief Minister.
In 1967, Dominica became an Associate State of the United Kingdom and formally took full responsibility for internal self-government, while the UK remained responsible for foreign policy and defence. |
