Rene Baptiste is a politician and former Cabinet Minister in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Early life and education
Baptiste was educated at Girls High School and the St. Vincent Grammar School. She went on to study Law at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus, Barbados, the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago.
Career
Rene Baptise is a lawyer by profession. In March 1986, she launched her private law firm (Baptiste & Co. Law Firm Inc). In 2000, Baptiste entered active politics and successfully contested the West Kingstown for the Unity Labour Party (ULP) in the 2001 general election. After the election, she was appointed Minister of Tourism and Culture. She retained her seat in the 2005 election and served as Minister of Urban Development, Culture, Labour and Electoral Matters from 29 December 2005 to 9 November, 2010. In December 2010, she retired from active politics.
Honours and awards
On 1 January 2011, she was honored with the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG) by the Queen for her work in Law, International Finance, Culture and Politics in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
