Ivan Charles Buchanan is a former Speaker of the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Early life and education

Ivan Charles Buchannan was born in Sandy Point, St. Kitts on 28 January 1921 to Joseph and Susannah (Fox) Buchanan. He received teacher training at the Education Department in St. Kitts from 1939 to 1941; received a diploma in Public Health from the School of Public Health in Jamaica in 1954; and postgraduate qualification from the University of Minnesota, in the United States, from 1959 to 1960.

Career

Ivan Buchanan served as Speaker of the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis from 6 February 1985 to 1995.

Prior to becomming Speaker, Buchannan had been a Civil Servant for 27 years beginning as a school teacher for five years before moving to the field of public health. He was Chief Public Health Inspector from 1949 to 1971.

He also served for some five years in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He has shown his versatility also in forging his name in the private, sector as a most knowledgeable and courteous business executive at the public company known locally as Trading and Development Corporation (TDC). He also served as Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank; Director in the Cable Television Company; and Director in National Caribbean Insurance Company.

He also had membership on the Board of Public Health Department and the Public Service Commission. He was also a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology and President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 1985-1995. He was a Justice of the Peace.

Personal life

Buchanan was twice married and was survived by his wife of more than four decades, Beatrice Buchanan, and children.

Honours and awards

Buchanan received several awards for his sterling service to nation building including War Service Medal from Her Majesty’s Government in 1945; Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992; and Health and Community Service Award from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis in 1983.

Death

Ivan Buchanan died on 14 January 2019. He was 97. He was accorded an Official Funeral on 28 January 2019 at the Wesley Methodist Church on Seaton Street just off of Victoria Road in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
