The Hon. Edward David Burt, JP, MP
Premier of Bermuda
Edward David Burt is a Bermudian politician and the current Premier of Bermuda.
Early life and education
Burt graduated from Florida Air Academy, in Melbourne, Florida, in 1996. He went on to attend The George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration with a double major in Finance and Information Systems in 2001. He was awarded The George Washington University Presidential Administrative Fellowship and received his Master of Science in Information Systems Development in 2003.
In 2004, David started GMD Consulting Limited, an IT and small business consulting firm focusing on project management and has served as President since its founding. In 2009, he was certified as a Project Management Professional. His proudest achievement in business is having mentored 3 Bermudians to attain their project management certifications.
Career
Edward David Burt was elected on the December 2012 general election to represent Constituency 18 - Pembroke West Central. Burt started his political career in November 2010 when he was appointed to the Senate; sequentially he was giving the portfolios: Junior Minster for Finance and Junior Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy. In addition to his responsibilities in the Senate, he served as Chief of Staff to Premier Paula Cox. Prior to serving in the Senate, he was Chairman of the Progressive Labour Party from October 2006 until October 2009.
Burt was elected Leader of the Progressive Labour Party at a Special Delegates Conference on 7 Novmber 2016. Prior to his election as leader, he served as Deputy Leader from October 2014.
Burt has served on the Tourism Board, National Training Board, and as a Director of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce. He is currently a Director of the Bermuda Small Business Development Corporation and is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
On 18 July 2017, Dunkley successfully led the PLP to victory in the general election. He was sworn in as Premier of Bermuda on 19 July 2017.
Personal life
David is the son of Gerald and Merlin Burt and he and his wife Kristin have two chldren.
