Dr. Leon Errol Cort
Former Cabinet Minister, Antigua and Barbuda

Errol Cort is an Antigua and Barbudan politician, lawyer, economist, and former Cabinet Minister.

Early life and education

Dr. Cort is a trained economist and also an Attorney-at-law. He received his secondary education at St. Joseph's Academy before completing a Bachelor's degree in commerce at Dalhousie University in 1979. He later earned BA and MA degree in Law from the University of Oxford (1985) and a doctorate in Economics from Dalhousie University (1985).

Career

In 2004, Cort unseated incumbent Prime Minister Lester Bird, in the St. John's Rural East constitutency. He was then served as Minister of Finance and the Economy in the Baldwin Spencer administration. After losing his seat to Bird in 2009, Cort was appointed a senator and Minister of National Security.

His portfolio previously included Industry, Commerce, Customs, Investment, Economic Planning and Development, and Financial Services Regulation, Property Valuation and Tax Compliance. He also served as Attorney General of Antigua and Barbuda from 1999 to 2001 during an earlier Antigua Labour Party government and was responsible for spearheading electoral reform in Antigua & Barbuda.

Cort unsuccessfully contested the 12 June 2014 election, losing again to Lester Bird of the Antigua and Babuda Labour Party.

Personal life

Cort is married to Sharilyn Cort.
