Philippe Sudré Dartiguenave

Philippe Sudré Dartiguenave was a Haitian politician, lawyer, Member of Parliament, and senator.

Early life

Dartiguenave was a mulatto, born on 6 April 1862 in Anse-à-Veau, Haiti. 

Career

He served as president of Haïti from 12 August 1915 to 15 May 1922 in a government set up by the United States after its intervention began on 27 July 1915 following an uprising which resulted in the death of Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. 

In 1915, Haiti was occupied by U.S. troops militairment who intervened in favor of banking institutions and industry in North America.  Political tensions are booming and popular uprisings shook the entire country.  The current president, Jean Guillaume Sam Vilbrun severely repressed by committing many such executions of political prisoners.  It ends up being murdered himself.  The United States intervenes and install a new president, Sudre Dartiguenave.

The latter will accept the American conditions and ensure U.S.  interests, including the Haitian American Sugar Company and banks such as U.S. investment bank Kuhn, Loeb & co.

The president Dartiguenave coming to term, the State Council, legislative body created by the Constitution of 1918, meets and elects Louis Borno 10 April 1922.

Death

Philippe Sudre Dartiguenave died on 26 July 1926 in his native commune of Anse-à-Veau. He was 64.
