Cabinet Minister, Antigua and Barbuda
H. Charles 'Max' Fernandez is an Antiguan parliamentarian and Cabinet Minister. Fernandez is the current parliamentary representative for St. John's Rural North for the Antiga and Barbuda Labour Party.
Early life and education
H. Charles “Max” Fernandez grew up in St. John’s City, and attended St. Joseph’s Academy. As an adult, he completed a Business Management Degree at the University of the West Indies.
Career
Mr. Fernandez joined the Antigua Labour party in 1984, and was appointed to Senate in 1995 by then Prime Minister Hon. Lester B. Bird. He served as a Senator until 2004.
During his time in the Senate, Mr. Fernandez also served as Chairman of the Board of The Free Trade and Processing Zone from 1995 to 2002, and Chairman of the Board of The Medical Benefits Scheme from 2002 to 2004.
Max Fernandez represented the ALP in the 2009 Elections in the St. John’s Rural North Constituency, where he presently resides with his wife Jill and three sons.
Prior to the 2014 election, Max was the Manager and Director of The Deluxe Theatre Ltd. on High and Cross Streets, and serves as a Director on the board of another local business.
Fernandez succesfully contested the St. John's Rural North constituency in the 12 June 2014 general election defeating incumbent John Maginley (UPP). On 18 June 2014, Fernandez was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
He retained his seat in the 2018 election and was appointed Minister of Tourism and Economic Development on 22 March 2018.
