Ronald Gajraj
Former Cabinet Minister, Guyana

Ronald Gajraj was a Guyanese politician and former Cabinet Minister.

Early life

Ronald Gajraj was born in Guyana in 1953.

Career

Gajraj was Home Affairs Minister in the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration under former President Bharrat Jagdeo from Janaury 1999 to May 2005.

Gajraj was forced to resign from Government under local and foreign diplomatic pressure, particularly from the Americans due to allegations linking him to the activities of a known group, ‘phantom squad’, a parallel security group that targeted criminals during an era described as one of the deadliest in Guyana’s modern history. His resignation followed a Jagdeo-appointed Commission of Inquiry that absolved him of any wrongdoing.

Following his resignation from Government, he was appointed Guyana’s High Commissioner to India in 2005.  In April of 2015, just one month short of the General Elections, Gajraj was also appointed as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He resigned when the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) + Alliance for Change (AFC) won the elections in May 2015 and returned to Guyana where he kept a relatively low profile.

Personal life

He was married to wife Chandra Gajraj, and was the father of two children - Aparna & Ranveer.

Death

Ronald Gajraj passed away suddenly on 15 December 2018, at the Woodlands Hospital, Guyana. He was 65.
