Johannes Samuel Petrus 'Johan' Kraag

Johannes Samuel Petrus 'Johan' Kraag was a Surinamese politician who served as the President of Suriname from 29 December 1990, until 16 September 1991

Career

Kraag was a member of Johan Adolf Pengel's National Party of Suriname, and held in the 1960s several ministerial posts. He belonged to the moderate wing who in 1975 rebelled against the political independence of Pengels successor Henck Arron.

After the military coup on 24 December 1990 (known as the "telephone coup"), Kraag was chosen by the Assembly as Acting President of Suriname. He was succeeded by Ronald Venetiaan.

Death

Kraag died on 24 May 1996, aged 83.
