David Sylvanus Lloyd, MBE
Former Member of Parliament, St. Kitts and Nevis
David Sylvanus Lloyd was a politician and Member of Parliament in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Career
In the 1946 election, the last held prior to the attainment of universal adult suffrage, Lloyd unseated Walter Hodge to win a seat in the Legislature. He successfully contested the Anguilla seat for the Workers’ League (later the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Labour Party) in the 1952 election defeating the two independent candidates - Walter Hodge and Adolphus Babrow. Running as a candidate for the new St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Labour Party, in 1957, Lloyd was unseated by Independent Candidate Kenneth Hazell. He failed to regain a seat in the 1966 election and did not contest any subsequent elections.
As a general contractor, Lloyd also supervised the building of the Valley Secondary School (V.S.S), that opened its doors to its first class of students during 1953.
Honours and awards
In 1968, Lloyd was made an Ordinary Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his voluntary public services in St. Kitts -Nevis-Anguilla.
