Senator the Hon. Shawn Marisa Nicholas
Opposition Senator, Antigua and Barbuda
Richard Lewis is an Antiguan journalist, politician and former senator.
Early life and education
A native of Wilikies, she attended Wilikies Primary School and Pares Secondary School. She was raised in Mayers and in her childhood, she regularly played in the area of the village called Top-A-Hill.
Nicholas holds a Master’s of Arts degree in journalism studies from the University of Wales (Cardiff) and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from the University of the West Indies. In 1999, she was the recipient of the British Chevening Scholarship
Career
Senator Nicholas has significant experience in journalism and public relations. From 1988-2001, she worked at ABS Television where she started by co-hosting the Feedback Programme and rose to the position of News Editor. After leaving ABS, she worked as the Public Relations Manager for the Medical Benefits Scheme and as a Marketing & Public Relations Executive for the Antigua Commercial Bank.
Nicholas was unsuccessful in her two bids at the polls in 2014 and 2018, failing to unseat incumbenmt Robin Yearwood on both occasions.
First appointed to the Senate as a Government Senator in April 2013, she was re-appointed as amn Opposition Senator in 2014 and 2018.
Personal life
A proud mother of one, she is a Vestry Member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church and has served the Anglican Communion in the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba in various capacities. She is also a distinguished past president of the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s.
She loves cooking, volunteering, and reaching out to our prison population helping to reintegrate them into society.
