Dermott Eustace McNair Southwell
Former Cabinet Minister, Dominica

Dermott Eustace McNair Southwell was a former Dominican parliamentarian and Cabinet Minister.

Early life and education

Dermott Eustace McNair Southwell was born in Montserrat on 24 December 1937. He was the son of the Right Excellent Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, National Hero, the second Premier, and first Chief Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.  He was the brother of Rustum, Shakespeare, Serene, Lorenzo, Pixie, Clytie, and Vesta (Vicki).

He attended the Dominica Grammar School and then went on to pursue studies in Airport Management and Administration in London and Personnel Administration and Industrial Relations in Trinidad.

Career

In 1990, Southwell was appointed as a Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) Senator in Parliament.  On 1 June 1990, he was appointed Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles. He held the position until June 1995.

He later held several top posts following the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) return to office in 2000.  At the time of his death, he was serving as Chairman of the Integrity in Public Office Commission. Southwell also served for a number of years as Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee. He was also a former Chairman of the Dominica Air and Seaports Authority, former Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Dominica, and Managing Director of J. Astaphan & Company.

Personal life

Southwell was married to wife, Alison, and the father of five children – Gillian, Wendy, Karen, Deanne and Dermot Jr.

Southwell was deeply involved in the community while continuously working to develop Dominica.  He was a devout Methodist and leader of the Bethesda Methodist choir and member of RiverSong choir.

Death
Dermott Southwell died on Wednesday, 25 July 2018 at the age of 80 following a period of illness.  He was accorded an official funeral in Dominica on Monday, 30 July 2018 at the Bethesda Methodist Church followed by interment at the Roseau Public Cemetery.
