Former President of Suriname

Jules Albert Wijdenbosch (born 2 May 1941 in Paramaribo) is a Surinamese politician who was President of Suriname from 1996 to 2000.

Early life and education

Jules Albert Wijdenbosch was born in Paramaribo, Dutch Guiana, on 2 May 1941.

Career

As a young man, Wijdenbosch served in the harbor office of Paramaribo as the ranking customs house officer. Afterward he ventured to the Netherlands, where he worked as a public servant in Amsterdam, and he also studied political science. Returning home in the late 1970s, he joined the NDP and struck up cordial relations with Colonel Bouterse, the future dictator. He was Prime Minister from April 1987 until January 1988, Vice President from January 1991 until September 1991, and President from September 1996 until August 2000.

He is now the leader of Democratic National Platform 2000.
