On Monday, 1 August 2016, the Cabinet of the Government of Belize underwent an urgent reshuffling. In a press release issued on the same day, Prime Minister Dean Barrow officially announced and explained the necessity for the changes, particularly in the Ministry of National Security, due to recent corruption scandals. The other changes also gave way to the naming of a new Senator solely for the police department, and the assigning of a new Minister of the portfolio of Natural Resources.

On 9 August 2016, following the passage of Hurricane Earl, the Prime Minister announced the appointment of Senator Carla Barnett as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance. Barnett is tasked to coordinate relief assistance for the recovery process of the hurricane.
