The National Democratic Party (NDP) (Dutch: Nationale Democratische Partij) is a political party in Suriname.
The NDP, also known as the purple party, was founded on 4 July 1987 in Paramaribo by Dési Bouterse to represent the interests of all Surinamese citizens The NDP is a broad-based party that claims to make no distinction on grounds of race and religion. The party has fought since its founding for change and renewal of Suriname. The ideology of the NDP is based on the "four innovations of the revolution ', which were central during the military period 1980-1987.
Four months after the establishment of the NDP took part in the elections. The policy in the military period was rejected by the vast majority of the people. The NDP got one seat in the coastal strip, which fell to gain 41 seats. In the interior, the party won two of the 10 seats. In 1991, the NDP was great back and managed to win 12 seats
NDP chairman Bouterse was elected President of Suriname on 19 July 2010, after he won the 2010 elections with his Mega Combinatie of which the NDP was the dominant party.
In 2015, the NDP ran alone and seured 26 of 51 seats. |
