The general election for the Legislative Council was held on Friday, 18 March 1955.
Electoral System
The five members of the Legislative Council were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting.
Political Parties & Candidates
Eight candidates contested the 1955 election; The Montserrat Labour Party (MLP), led by William Henry Bramble presented four candidates, while the Merchant Planters presented three candidates. There was also one independent candidate.
Results
The Montserrat Labour Party (MLP) retained the parliamentary majority in government led by William Henry Bramble, winning three of the five seats in the Legislative Council. The other two seats were won by the independent candidate R W Griffiths (who had left the MLP); and by a Merchant Planter, James Wall.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 98.2% of the 2,911 registered voters.

The first sitting of the new Legislative Council was held on Wednesday, 23 June 1955. |
