Montserrat General Election Results - 2 March 1961

The general election for the Legislative Council was held on Thursday, 2 March 1961.

Electoral System

The seven members of the Legislative Council were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting.

Background

Montserrat's Constitution took effect on 1 January 1960 and introduced the system of ministerial government.  The number of elected seats in the Legislative Council was increased from five to seven.  The Legislative Council was dissolved on Saturday, 4 February 1961; and Nomination Day was set for Monday, 20 February 1961.

Political Parties & Candidates

Two parties contested the 1961 election - the Montserrat Labour Party (MLP), led by Chief Minister William Henry Bramble; and the Montserrat Workers' Progressive Party (MWPP).

Results

The election was dominated by the Montserrat Labour Party (MLP) led by William Henry Bramble, which won five of the seven seats in the Legislative Council.  The MWPP won the remaining two seats.

Voter Turnout

Voter turnout was 60.8% of the 4,639 registered voters.

Post-election

MLP leader William Henry Bramble remained Chief Minister.
