The general election for the Legislative Council was held in November 1978.
Electoral System
The seven members of the Legislative Council were elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting.
Background
The Legislative Council was dissolved on Thursday, 2 November 1978.
Political Parties & Candidates
Eighteen candidates contested the elections; both the People’s Liberation Movement (PLM) and the ruling Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) nominated seven candidates, with four independents also running.
Results
The election was dominated by the People’s Liberation Movement (PLM) led by John A. Osborne, winning all seven of the seats in the Legislative Council. The former parliamentary majority party, the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) won no seats.
Voter Turnout
Voter turnout was 78.2% of the 5,679 registered voters.
