General Election Results - 3 March 1988

General elections were held in Turks and Caicos Islands on 3 March 1988. This was the first election under the ministerial form of government in which the multi-votes constituencies was used in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The number of elected seats in the Legislative Council was increased by two to 13.

There were three major parties contesting the elections. These were the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), Progressive National Party (PNP,) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

The result was a victory for the PDM winning 11 of 13 seats. The PNP won the remaining 2 seats. The National Democratic Alliance NDA did not win any seat.

PDM leader Oswald Skippings was sworn in as the Chief Minister. He had previously served a brief stint in 1980 as Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands as a result of the death of the Honourable Jags McCartney.

The leaders of the PNP and NDA lost their seats. This was the first time that the leader of any major political party lost a seat in a general election.

Voter turnout was 81.68%.
