General Election Results - 9 November 2012

General elections were held in Turks and Caicos Islands on 9 November 2012.

The territorial government was restored under a new Constitution (October 2012) after a general election in November 2012, however, there continues to be a Governor, who is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen, and is the Supreme Executive Representative-Authority of Her Majesty. There is a Deputy Governor, who must be a Belonger and appointed by the Governor; the Cabinet and the House of Assembly.

Under the new constitution that came into effect in October 2012, legislative power is held by a unicameral House of Assembly consisting of 19 seats, 15 elected and 4 appointed by the governor; of elected members, five are elected at large and 10 from single member districts for four-year terms.

Three parties contested the election, including two older parties – Progressive National Party (PNP) and Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) as well as a newly established Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), consisting of a mainly Haitian born leadership who wanted to offer a third choice to voters.

Nomination Day was on Thursday, 25 October 2012. A total of 26 candidates registered to contest the 10 seats elected in single mandate districts and 11 candidates ran for five seats “all islands” district which offered voters a genuine choice from amongst a plurality of political options. In addition to candidates representing political parties, there were two non-party candidates - one in all-island district and one in Election District #5.

After the 2012 elections, Rufus Ewing of the Progressive National Party won a narrow majority of the elected seats and was appointed premier.

Voter turnout was 87.13%.

The first meeting of the new Parliament was held on Wednesday, 28 November 2012.
