General Election Results - 9 December 2015

General elections were held on Wednesday, 9 December 2015 for all directly elected members of the House of Assembly on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.

The unicameral Parliament of St. Vincent, the House of Assembly, comprises 15 elected Representatives and six Senators appointed by the Governor-General – four on the advice of the Prime Minister and two on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition.  The normal duration of the legislature is five years.

On 7 November 2015, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced that the House of Assembly would be dissolved on 7 November in view of general elections to be held on 9 December.  Nomination Day would be on 20 November 2015.

There were 43 candidates vying for the 15 seats. Apart from the ULP and the NDP, the other parties are the three-year-old Democratic Republican Party (DRP), led by former senator Anesia Baptiste, which is contesting six seats while there are seven candidates for the SVG Green Party, which is led by Ivan O’Neal.

The final list, published on 30 December 2015 indicated that there were 89,527 registered voters, comprising 45,823 males and 43,704 females, out of a population of 109,373.

The Ralph Gonsalves led Unity Labour Party (ULP) retains to government in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for a historic fourth consecutive term. In a tightly contested race, the ULP won eight seats, while the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Arnhim Eustace, won seven seats. As such, the balance of seats in the tenth parliament remains the same as in the ninth parliament.

The ULP won the North Windward Montgomery Daniel), North Central Windward (Ralph Gonsalves), South Central Windward (Saboto Caesar), South Windward (Frederick Stephenson), Marriaqua (St. Clair Prince), East St George (Camillo Gonsalves), West St George (Cecil McKie), and Central Leeward (Louis Straker) seats.

The NDP retained seats in East Kingstown (Arnhim Eustace), Central Kingstown (St. Clair Leacock), West Kingstown (Daniel Cummings), South Leeward (Nigel Stephenson), North Leeward (Roland Matthews), Northern Grenadines (Godwin Friday) and and Southern Grenadines (Terrance Ollivierre).

The other parties in the race, the SVG Green Party (SVGP) and the Democratic Republic Party (DRP) failed to win any seats.

Based on unofficial figures, it is estimated that 65,684 persons cast their votes out of a total electorate of 89,527 people are registered to vote in the election. Turnout was 73.37%. The ULP revived 34,222 votes (52.33% of valid votes), against 30,974 votes (47.37%) for the NDP, The SVGP received 80 votes (0.12%) and the DRP received 153 votes (0.23%). there were 291 rejected ballots (0.44% of ballots cast).

Despite the same distribution of seats there will be a slight change in the face of House of Assembly. The new parliament will include 12 incumbents from the previous parliament, two newcomers (Camillo Gonsalves and St. Clair Prince) from the ULP and Sir Louis Straker who returns to the Central Leeward seat after five years in retirement. With former Marriaqua MP Girlyn Miguel not seeking re-election, and no female candidates being successful in the 2015 election, the tenth parliament has no elected women MPs.
